Workshop teaches herbarium building
Residents are encouraged to join the next BeltLine Arboretum Workshop: Building an Herbarium 2 to 5 p.m. Friday at the Trees Atlanta Treehouse, 112 Krog St. NE No. 7, Atlanta, according to a news release.
Rebecca Park, who helps maintain the trail, will teach participants how to collect plant samples and press them in a collective field notebook. This class will be collecting winter samples of dried seed heads and tree buds.
Each person will gather at least two specimens, collect botanical data, and write observations to be included in the collective field notebook. Participants should be prepared to be outside for part of the workshop and be willing to walk at an easy pace for up to 1.5 miles.
Projects happen rain or shine. Projects will be canceled if inclement weather such as lightning occurs and is forecasted to persist for the duration of the project. Because the weather is sometimes unpredictable, the decision to cancel is typically made at the project start time. Participants will be contacted via email if the event will be canceled in advance.
You must wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.
Long-sleeved shirts are recommended to protect your skin from poison ivy and sun.
Sturdy pants from which you can easily remove weed seeds also are recommended. Denim, cotton duck, or khaki materials are great. Leggings and athletic wear that is mostly polyester/spandex are not recommended.
All volunteers need closed-toed shoes or boots, clothes that can get dirty, sunscreen and bug spray as needed, snacks as needed (though a meal or snack before the project is recommended), and drinking water in reusable containers. No one-time-use plastic bottles, please.
