1 PRO BASEBALL: Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard has a torn elbow ligament and needs Tommy John surgery that will keep him out of action this year. He’ll have the operation Thursday. Syndergaard was the No. 2 starter in a strong rotation behind two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom. New York has for now sufficient starters to make up for Syndergaard’s absence, with Marcus Stroman, Michael Wacha, Rick Porcello and Steven Matz.
2 COLLEGE BASKETBALL:
Minnesota center Daniel Oturu is leaving for the NBA draft after leading the Big Ten in rebounding, blocked shots and shooting percentage as a sophomore,averaging 20.1 points, 11.3 rebounds and 2.5 blocks.
3 COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Lee Green, a defensive standout who played on two NCAA Tournament teams for St. John’s, died in New York. He was 49. The New York Post quoted former teammate and friend Lamont Middleton in reporting Green’s death was related to the coronavirus.
4 TRACK AND FIELD: The world championships in Eugene, Ore., could move from 2021 to 2022 after the Olympics were postponed. World Athletics says it is talking with organizers about“alternative dates.”The championships are due to run from Aug. 6-15, 2021, which would conflict with the Olympics if the same July-August slot as originally planned for 2020 is used next year.
5 PRO FOOTBALL: Kansas City agreed to a one-year contract with Jordan Ta’amu, the XFL’s toprated quarterback. He’ll compete with Chad Henne for a backup job. Ta’amu, 22, was undrafted out of Mississippi last year and spent time in training camp with the Texans. He was released in August and signed with the St. Louis Battlehawks, where he led the XFL with an 82.8 passer rating and 72.4% completion percentage.
