Brookhaven employees set to return to City Hall

New safety measures will be in place; offices open to the public June 1.

City of Brookhaven employees will begin returning to City Hall next week as officials reopen more public facilities.

City Hall has been closed since March 14, when a government employee tested positive for COVID-19 and forced many city staff members into a mandatory 14-day isolation.

Employees are set to return to work Tuesday with City Hall opening to the public on June 1, the city announced in a statement.

Workers will split shifts to reduce the number of people inside at one time, officials said. Employees will also be required to use personal protective equipment like masks, hand sanitizer and gloves.

New plexiglass windows were installed at the permit counter and reception area, and markings were added to the lobby area to space out visitors.

The Brookhaven Police Department will remain closed to the public, and the Municipal Court is also still shut down.

Brookhaven City Manager Christian Sigman said in a statement that the city “waited for the data from the Board of Health before implementing reopening plans.”

“I recognize this is a very fluid situation, and guidance from the state and federal government is not always very clear. I ask that residents be patient and know we are willing to reevaluate our plans based on actual experience in the coming weeks and months,” Sigman said.

Brookhaven plans to gradually reopen its recreational facilities, beginning with “passive” athletic fields and dog parks on June 1. A detailed plan and list is available at brookhavenga.gov.
