City to apply for federal funding for park, center

Acworth officials will apply for additional federal funding through the Community Development Block Grant for up to $225,000 for the new Hill Park and the Rosenwald School Renovation Project.

This decision was made this month by the Acworth Board of Aldermen.

The Hill Park Project will serve as an outdoor interpretive history area that will include a plaza, landscaping, public art and history markers, said Alex Almodóvar, assistant to Acworth City Manager Brian Bulthuis, in an email to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“The park is an effort to honor our rich African-American history in the community,” Almodóvar said, specifically naming the park in honor of Doyal Hill, Acworth’s first African-American Council member.

Thescope will include signage, public art, grading, storm water, landscaping and hard scapes with concrete and pavers.

For the Rosenwald School Renovation, the scope will include:

■ Making necessary improvements to the foundation to support assembly occupant load and to replace joists that have been damaged over time due to termites, water, etc.

■ Evaluating exterior facade to determine if removal of paint and/or encapsulation is the best option.

■ Removing modern materials to see if original materials are salvageable such as flooring, ceiling and walls and then either refurbish or replace materials as needed.

■ Minor mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades to the building.
