Tens of thousands of people protested in Russia’s Far East on Saturday in a rare display of opposition to President Vladimir Putin in the country’s vast hinterland, chanting “Putin Resign” and demanding the release of a regional governor arrested this past week on suspicion of multiple murders.
2 Police officers killed:
Two police officers were shot and killed Saturday in a South Texas border town after reportedly responding to a disturbance call, authorities said. A suspect in the shooting was also shot, though that person’s condition was not immediately available.
3 Radar responsible for downing of jet, Iran says:
Iranian investigators have blamed the downing of a Ukrainian passenger jet over the capital Tehran this year on the misalignment of an air defense unit’s radar system, a report said Saturday. All 176 passengers were killed in the Jan. 8 crash, which sparked widespread public anger after Iranian authorities took days to admit that its forces had fired an antiaircraft missile at the Boeing 737-800 shortly after its takeoff from Imam Khomeini International Airport.
4 Gas prices
up: The average price of regulargrade gasoline in the United States increased by 2 cents through the past two weeks, to $2.24 per gallon. That’s 59 cents below the average pump price from a year ago. Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg of the Lundberg Survey said Sunday that the increase comes as crude oil prices rise.
