Call or go online for help with Social Security

- PAMELA MILLER FOR THE AJC

During the current pandemic, the Social Security Administration will continue to provide help. While the offices are not providing service to walk-in visitors due to COVID-19, the staff remains ready and able to help by phone with most Social Security business, according to a press release.

Those in need of help can speak with a representative by calling the local Social Security office or the toll-free number. Find local office phone numbers online by using the Social Security Office Locator at ssa.gov/locator.

There are many secure and convenient online services at ssa. gov/onlineservices, where you can apply for Retirement, Disability, and Medicare benefits; check the status of an application or appeal; request a replacement Social Security card (in most areas); or print a benefit verification letter.

Although most business can be done online, officials know that service channel isn’t right for everyone. Residents can still count on the Social Security Administration by phone.

If you have a critical situation that cannot be resolved by phone or online, staff may be able to schedule an appointment.

If you need help, please don’t wait until you can get it in person. Call now and get the help you need. Getting medical and other documentation can be difficult due to the pandemic, so certain deadlines are being extended wherever possible.
