THE HOT CORNER

-

1 HORSE RACING: Jockeys riding at Saratoga Race Course won’t be allowed to return to the track if they compete elsewhere during the summer meet that starts today. In the past week, at least six jockeys have tested positive for the coronavirus, including five who rode at Los Alamitos in Southern California earlier this month. Many of those riders then competed at other tracks around the country.

2 OBITUARY: Jockey Ken Church, who rode more than 2,000 winners during a 20-year career that included four mounts in the Kentucky Derby, died Monday. He was 90. Church was diagnosed with pneumonia a week ago at the retirement facility where he lived in Reno, Nevada, and was taken to a hospital. He contracted COVID-19 there and died, his daughter Debbie Anderson told Del Mar track officials in California.

3 GOLF: Organizers fixed an oversight Wednesday by agreeing to move the pandemic-postponed Curtis Cup so that it doesn’t conflict with the Solheim Cup. The Curtis Cup was to be held this year at Conwy Golf Club in Wales until the pandemic led to a series of postponements. It originally was pushed back to Sept. 3-5 in 2021, except that’s the same week as the Solheim Cup at Inverness Club in Ohio. Now, the Curtis Cup has been moved to Aug. 26-28 in 2021.

4 BASEBALL: The Dodgers are selling fan cutouts with prices ranging from $149 to $299. Net proceeds will benefit the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation. The team may relocate or remove the fan cutouts if it’s able to sell tickets during the season.

PRO HOCKEY: The New York 5 Islanders locked up their goaltender of the future, signing Ilya Sorokin to a $2 million contract for next season. Sorokin, 24, is considered one of the top prospects at any position not currently in the NHL.
