THE HOT CORNER
1 OLYMPICS:
Leaders of a newly formed athletes group are calling for a change to the rule that bans certain protests at the Olympics, saying it “is in fact preventing athletes from displaying Olympism at the Olympic Games.” The board of The Athletics Association, a group of track and field athletes that formed this week to advocate for a greater athlete voice, says it wants changes that will allow athletes to “peacefully protest against social injustices in the world, without punishment or sanctions.”
2 PRO BASKETBALL:
The NBA is tweaking the rules for its initial restart exhibition games, going with 10-minute quarters instead of the usual 12 minutes. The change is for several reasons — among them, not wanting to overly tax players after they went more than four months without games, and because some teams do not have their full rosters at Walt Disney World yet because of coronavirus and other issues.
3 PRO HOCKEY:
Edmonton Oilers defenseman Caleb Jones says he tested positive for the coronavirus before training camp. Jones said Friday he tested positive when he returned to Edmonton from his home in Dallas. He says he was asymptomatic.
4 PRO GOLF:
Joel Stalter of France closed with a 2-under 68 for a two-shot victory Saturday in the Euram Bank Open, the second straight Austrian event that counts toward the European Tour and the Challenge Tour. Stalter had gone 80 tournaments worldwide since his only previous victory as a pro.
5 BASEBALL:
Dodgers center fielder AJ Pollack arrived to camp after enduring a bout with COVID-19 and having a daughter born three months prematurely. Pollock said Friday he thinks he got the coronavirus while in the hospital with his daughter.
