1 CYCLING: The rescheduled Giro d’Italia will start with four stages in Sicily. The race will begin with a 10-mile individual time trial from Monreale to Palermo on Oct. 3, race organizer RCS Sport said Friday. This year’s Giro was originally scheduled to start with three stages in Hungary and run from May 9-31 but it was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
2 SOCCER: The Spanish seconddivision club that had an outbreak of coronavirus on its team said Friday one of its players has been hospitalized as a precaution. Fuenlabrada said the unnamed player had“felt unwell and was taken to a hospital” in La Coruna in northwest Spain.
3 TENNIS: Retired Dutch wheelchair tennis great Esther Vergeer said Friday she has successfully completed breast cancer treatment and will resume her work schedule. The 39-yearold Vergeer, who had a winning streak of 470 matches during her record-breaking career, said she will return to work as the leader of the Dutch team as it prepares for next year’s Tokyo Paralympics.
4 SOCCER: Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber offered to resign Friday in the latest fallout from meetings he had with FIFA President Gianni Infantino during a sprawling investigation into soccer corruption.
5 BASEBALL: Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw went on the injured list because of a back issue hours before he was scheduled to start Thursday night for Los Angeles against the San Francisco Giants on opening day of the shortened season. Manager Dave Roberts said Kershaw’s back stiffened up in a weight room workout two days ago. The Dodgers beat the Giants 8-1.
