Ashleigh Barty, the world’s No. 1 women’s player, said Thursday she is skipping the U.S. Open, which is scheduled to begin Aug. 31 in New York.“There are still significan­t risks involved due to COVID-19, and I don’t feel comfortabl­e putting my team and I in that position,” Barty said.

AUTO RACING:

Formula One driver Sergio Perez is out of Sunday’s British Grand Prix after testing positive for the coronaviru­s. The Racing Point driver will go into isolation. The race Sunday will be the fourth in the pandemic-affected season that should have begun in March.

PRO GOLF:

Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez led a Spanish charge in the European Tour’s latest stop in England, shooting a course-record 10-under 62 in the opening round of the Hero Open on Thursday. Fellow Spaniards Pablo Larrazabal and Miguel Angel Jimenez finished with a share of second place two shots back. Jimenez, 56, who made his first start at the 1983 Benson and Hedges Spanish Open and is playing his record 707th European Tour appearance, was greeted by applauding players when he reached the 18th green.

PRO SOCCER:

Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund withdrew its bid to buy English Premier League club Newcastle after the process was stalled by concerns about piracy by the kingdom and human rights complaints. The league spent four months considerin­g whether to approve the $392 million takeover.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL:

South Carolina’s top scorer and rebounder AJ Lawson is returning to school for his junior season. Lawson announced on social media Wednesday he is withdrawin­g from the NBA draft. The 6-foot-6 guard from Toronto started all 31 games last season, averaging team highs with 13.4 points and 3.7 rebounds.
