1 Election postponed: Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam announced Friday that the government will postpone highly anticipate­d legislativ­e elections by one year, citing a worsening coronaviru­s outbreak in the semi-autonomous Chinese city. The Hong Kong government is invoking an emergency ordinance in delaying the elections. Lam said the government has the support of the Chinese government in making the decision to hold the elections on Sept. 5, 2021.

2 Afghan attacks: Some of the most intense border clashes between Pakistan and Afghanista­n in recent years left at least 15 civilians dead on the Afghan side Thursday, officials said.

3 DeGeneres apologizes: E.llen DeGeneres apologized to the staff members of her talk show in an email Thursday, a week after Warner Bros. Television informed employees that its parent company would conduct an investigat­ion into the program’s workplace. DeGeneres wrote: “On day one of our show, I told everyone in our first meeting that ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ would be a place of happiness — no one would ever raise their voice, and everyone would be treated with respect. Obviously, something changed, and I am disappoint­ed to learn that this has not been the case. And for that, I am sorry.”

4 Filmmaker dies: Filmmaker Alan Parker, one of Britain’s most successful directors whose movies included “Bugsy Malone,” “Midnight Express” and “Evita,” died at 76. Parker’s work includes “Fame, ”“Mississipp­i Burning,”“The Commitment­s” and “Angela’s Ashes.” Parker died in London after a long illness.

5 Duke banned: Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke has been banned from Twitter for breaking the social media platform’s rules forbidding hate speech.
