1 PRO FOOTBALL:
The New York Giants bolstered their pass rush by re-signing linebacker Markus Golden, their leader in sacks last season. Golden’s contract is a one-year tender for $5.1 million. Golden was a free agent in the offseason who went unsigned. Golden had 10 sacks in 2019, more than twice the total of any other Giants defender. The 29-year-old is entering his sixth season.
2 COLLEGE FOOTBALL:
Minnesota star wide receiver and Georgia native Rashod Bateman will pass on a 2020 college football season and enter the 2021 NFL draft. He is projected to be a first-round pick. Bateman, from Tifton, totaled 111 receptions, 1,923 yards and 17 touchdowns in two years with the Gophers.
3 NASCAR:
Chip Ganassi Racing has made a crew chief change for the No. 42 driven by Matt Kenseth, with engineer Phil Surgen taking over for the remainder of the season. He replaces Chad Johnston, who had been the crew chief for the No. 42 team since 2016.
4 NASCAR:
Leavine Family Racing has sold its NASCAR team but will finish the season with driver Christopher Bell. Team owner Bob Leavine made the announcement Tuesday, saying he could not risk his construction business by continuing to fund the team.
5 PRO TENNIS:
Slovenian qualifier Kaja Juvan upset second-seeded Markéta Vondroušová of the Czech Republic 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 Tuesday in the first round of the Palermo Ladies Open. Top-seeded Petra Marti eased into the second round with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Alison Van Uytvanck. Russian qualifier Ludmilla Samsonova beat Kirsten Flipkens 6-4, 6-2. But fifth-seeded Elise Mertens lost 6-4, 6-1 to Belarusian qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Océane Dodin rallied from a set down to beat Tamara Zidanšek 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Fiona Ferro triumphed 6-2, 6-1 over Nadia Podoroska.
