THE HOT CORNER

-

BASEBALL:

Cleveland is minus two of its top starting pitchers after putting Mike Clevinger and Zach Plesac on the restricted list. The Indians made the moves after the right-handers broke team rules and MLB protocols by leaving their hotel in Chicago last weekend and risking exposure to the coronavirus.

BASEBALL:

Yankees designated hitter/outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is expected to miss three to four weeks after being diagnosed with a grade 1 left hamstring strain. Manager Aaron Boone says the team is still evaluating the 2017 NL MVP and the timeline could be adjusted.

PRO GOLF:

Li Haotong finished with a double bogey Sunday at the PGA Championship, and it was more costly than just money. That knocked him out of the top 10 and cost him a spot in the U.S. Open next month. The U.S. Open offered spots to the leading three players at the PGA not already eligible, provided they were among the top 10. That double bogey sent Li from a tie for 10th to a tie for 17th.

CYCLING:

Cycling’s road world championships in Switzerland next month were canceled Wednesday after a government ruling on mass gatherings during the pandemic was extended until October. However, cycling’s governing body said it still hoped to find a new host for the event on the same dates of Sept. 20-27. Swiss organizers of the championships said they could not continue within a federal limit of 1,000 people for major events.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

Bill Yeoman, the longtime Houston coach who led the Cougars to four Southwest Conference titles and a school-record 160 victories, has died. He was 92. The school’s first inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame, Yeoman coached the Cougars from 1962-1986.
