Pitchers crushed early on
For the second straight game, the Braves (11-8) found themselves in an early hole that a late rally could not overcome. Here’s a recap:
The details
Luke Voit hit a three-run homer in the first inning off Touki Toussaint to give the Yankees the early advantage. They would lead 8-0 before the Braves scored six runs combined in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
At the plate
The Braves totaled eight hits, including two each from Marcell Ozuna and Tyler Flowers. Ozuna got the Braves’ charge started with a three-run homer in the sixth, his fourth of the season. He also had a double.
On the mound
Toussaint took the loss as he worked four innings and gave up six runs (five earned) and six hits. Bryce Wilson followed for his season debut and allowed two earned runs in 1⅔ innings.
Notable
■ Ronald Acuna was a late scratch with a left wrist soreness. It is believed the injury occurred diving back into a base Monday. Dansby Swanson moved into the leadoff spot.
■ The Braves struck out eight times, including four by Travis d’Arnaud, to run their major league-leading total to 195.
■ The Braves traded first baseman Yonder Alonso to the Padres for cash considerations.
Quotable
“We have young pitchers who are learning. You’re not going to change that. They’re not all of a sudden going to be veteran guys. No matter what the situation is, you have to weather storms with them. They have to learn and keep pitching. That’s the only way they’re going to figure this out. You keep running them out there because they have stuff. It doesn’t matter if it’s 160, 60, 25 (games), whatever. They’re learning.”
