Chase offers big grocery perk
The Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Unlimited cards have a new offer to check out. As an add-on to the existing $200 welcome bonus that comes with each card, Chase has upped the ante with a grocery store cash back offer that could be worth up to $600. That’s a total of $800 in potential rewards just for signing up and spending with the card for a year.
Here’s how the new offer works:
Spend $500 within the first three months of card membership to get the standard $200 welcome bonus. There are no category spending restrictions for this.
Use your new Chase card for grocery store shopping within the first year of membership to earn 5% cash back on purchases.
Earn up to $600 in cash back at grocery stores for that first year.
While the names are similar and the welcome bonus applies to both cards, there are some noticeable differences in the way the Freedom and the Freedom Unlimited hand out cash back rewards. The Chase Freedom card is a rotating 5% cash back rewards card. This means that Chase picks a spending category — such as gasoline or restaurants — and boosts cash back rewards to 5% on those purchases for a period of time. These categories typically change every three months. Purchases made outside the bonus spending category earn 1% in cash back rewards. The Chase Freedom Unlimited offers a standard 1.5% cash back on everyday purchases. Aside from the welcome bonus deal, you’ll find that you receive the same 1.5% cash back reward rate no matter where you make a purchase with the card. There are no rotating bonus categories for this card. There is no expiration date on cash back rewards for either card nor is there a redemption minimum.
Some perks that you’ll receive — no matter which card you pick — include: no annual fee; the welcome bonus mentioned above; introductory 0% APR on new purchases for 15 month; 5% cash back on Lyft rides through March 2022; and 3 free months of DoorDash’s DashPass subscription service.
