Status of four Five Stripes players remains undecided

- By Doug Roberson doug.roberson@ajc.com

The status for Atlanta United players Ezequiel Barco, Jurgen Damm, Miles Robinson and Matheus Rossetto will be decided after today’s training session, according to interim manager Stephen Glass. The team will play at Chicago on Sunday.

Barco, a midfielder and Designated Player, has missed the past two games with an unspecified leg injury. He is tied for the team lead in goals (2).

Damm, a winger, is close to being able to return, according to Glass, after leaving the Nashville game with a hamstring injury. Damm didn’t appear in the past two games.

Robinson, a centerback, and Rossetto, a midfielder, were subbed off to start the second half of Wednesday’s 1-0 win against Dallas.

Glass said Friday’s train- ing session mostly was about recovery and that Saturday’s would be more of a typical training session. They want to see how the players react.

Jon Gallagher and Jake Mulraney have started in place of Barco the past two games and performed well. Franco Esco- bar played in Robinson’s place in the second half against Dal- las. Rossetto was replaced by Eric Remedi, who moved to defensive midfielder.

New players

Glass provided updates Friday on two of the team’s newer players, Erik Lopez and Marcelino Moreno.

Lopez looks good training with the first team and will be a quality player for the club for years, according to Glass. Lopez, who will be able to play for the senior team next season, has been training with the team since he signed with Atlanta United 2 this season.

“Dangerous, two good feet,” Glass said. “Can finish. Can run. Will do the work off it. He will be a good player for the club in the long run.”

Atlanta United signed Lopez, 18, from Club Olimpia in Paraguay on July 18.

Moreno, whose signing as a Designated Player was announced Tuesday, hasn’t arrived in Atlanta. Moreno can’t play until he obtains a visa and goes through a 10-day quarantine.

Glass said once Moreno arrives he will train individu- ally before joining the team. From watching film, Glass said Moreno is very attackminded and can play any of the positions up front.

Atlanta United centerback Fernando Meza said the team is eager for Moreno to arrive because he will bring an ele- ment of freshness.

“He’s not coming to fill Josef ’s (Martinez) role, but will be someone who can help our team,” Meza said.
