PRO BASEBALL:

Longtime executive Sandy Alderson will return to the Mets as team president if Steve Cohen’s purchase of the club is approved. Alderson, a senior adviser for the A’s, was Mets general manager from 2010-18 and stepped down after being diagnosed with cancer. Cohen reached an agreement this month to buy the Mets but needs to be approved by at least 23 owners for the sale to be completed.

PRO TENNIS:

Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas reached his first claycourt semifinal in 16 months, beating Dusan Lajovic 7-6 (5), 6-2 at the Hamburg Open, the last tuneup before the French Open. Tsitsipas will face Chile’s Christian Garin, who beat Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. The other semifinal will pit Andrey Rublev against Casper Ruud. Rublev eliminated Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 7-5, and Ruud beat Ugo Humbert 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.

PRO SOCCER:

Lionel Messi criticized the exit of teammate Luis Suarez on Friday, dealing another blow to a damaged relationsh­ip between the Argentine and Barcelona’s leadership. Messi expressed sadness and anger for his friend’s departure after the club transferre­d Suarez to Atletico Madrid. Barcelona is overhaulin­g its squad after a loss in the Champions League last month.

PRO CYCLING:

A Slovenian businessma­n bought Tour de France champ Tadej Pogacar’s yellow jersey for $54,000 in a charity auction. Pogacar, 22, became the youngest winner in the 116-year history of the tour Sunday.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

Spencer Brown rushed for three touchdowns and set a UAB career record, fellow senior Austin Watkins Jr. had a career-high 183 yards receiving with a score, and the visiting Blazers defeated South Alabama 42-10 Thursday.
