Where Can I Find It?
Where can I find it?
Half-gallon freezer bags, frozen New Zealand Greenshell mussels and a business that can restore an old mirror,
Q: I was given some half-gallon freezer bags and have not been able to find them in local grocery stores. Where can I locate them in Atlanta? Thanks in advance for your assistance. — Yvonne Waters, East Point
A: Those half-gallon or 2-quart food storage bags are an odd size, but Ziploc came out with a limited edition freezer version, and I wonder if that’s what you had. Other than through Amazon, those are no longer available, and I couldn’t find another manufacturer that made them. However, if you’d consider a zip bag smaller than a gallon but larger than a half-gallon, I have a solution for you. A few years ago, I came across IKEA Istad food storage bags, and I’ve never bought another brand. They’re heavy-duty, with double zip closures, and they work perfectly as freezer bags. I use them to freeze liquids and solids with no issues. Istad bags come in sizes in-between the food storage bags you usually find. The one I’m thinking of for you is the yellow-striped 3-quart bag. Most IKEA bags come with two sizes in each box. A box of 25 3-quart bags is packaged with 25 1-quart bags and sells for $2.99. IKEA makes these without BPA and uses plastic containing at least 20-percent renewable content from sugar cane. You’ll find them in the Cooking and Eating section at IKEA, 441 16th St. NW, Atlanta, 888-888-4532, or you can order online through ikea.com.
Q: My husband and I purchased a home recently, and the previous owners left a large mirror. It is beautiful and has intricate metalwork that matches the nearby chandelier. Our problem is that the mirror is very dirty, particularly behind the metalwork, and I can’t figure out how to clean it. I am looking for a company that might specialize in this type of cleaning. Can you make a few suggestions? — Brenda Varney, email
A: Buckhead Fine Restorations, 2217 Irvindale Drive, Atlanta, 770-455-1106, specializes in the repair, restoration and conservation of antiques and fine art, including mirrors. I spoke with a representative who was sure that the company could handle your cleaning needs. Email a detailed photo of the mirror to sales@ buckheadfinerestorations.com, and someone will let you know what’s required to get your mirror sparkling again.
Q: Since moving to the Atlanta area, we have been unable to find boxes of frozen New Zealand Greenshell or green-lipped mussels. Any clue? Thanks for your help. — John Riggle, email
A: Check out the seafood freezer at Buford Highway Farmers Market, 5600 Buford Highway, Doraville, 770-455-0770. You’ll find Sanford Greenshell New Zealand mussels priced at $10.99 for a 2-pound box.
