1 Toobin fired: The New Yorker fired longtime staff writer Jeffrey Toobin after he reportedly exposed himself during a Zoom conference last month. He had already been on suspension and is also on leave from CNN, where he is chief legal analyst. Toobin, 60, is one of the country’s most prominent legal authors. He is a former associate counsel in the Department of Justice who has written about everything from the O.J. Simpson murder trial to the impeachmen­t hearings of President Donald Trump.

2 American to be released: Russia’s Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the release, after 19 months of house arrest, of a prominent American investor charged with alleged embezzleme­nt. The court said it took note of Michael Calvey’s compliance with the house arrest imposed in April 2019, and of his stated need to be able to take walks for health reasons.

3 Discrimina­tion ruling: A federal appeals court ruled Thursday that Harvard University is not violating civil rights law in its admissions, supporting a lower-court ruling that rejected claims that the school was discrimina­ting against Asian Americans by holding them to a higher standard than other applicants.

4 Embassy attacked: At least one gunman opened fire outside the Saudi Embassy in The Hague, local police officials said Thursday, a day after a World War I commemorat­ion attended by European officials was attacked in Saudi Arabia. No one was injured in what was a rare attack on embassies or other diplomatic missions in the Netherland­s.

5 Ex-president dies: Ghana’s ex-president Jerry Rawlings, who staged two coups and later led the West African country’s transition to a stable democracy, died. Rawlings, 73, had been receiving treatment after a short illness.
