THE HOT CORNER
SOCCER: Diego Maradona was released from a Buenos Aires hospital Wednesday, just over a week after undergoing brain surgery, and will continue his recovery in a private home. Maradona’s doctor, Leopoldo Luque, told journalists that he had authorized the release. Maradona’s lawyer, Matias Morla, said the 60-year-old Argentine will continue to receive treatment for alcohol dependency.
BASEBALL: Mets pitcher Marcus Stroman and San Francisco starter Kevin Gausman accepted $18.9 million qualifying offers Wednesday, receiving one-year deals to stay with their teams rather than test free agency. Four players declined offers at the deadline: right-hander Trevor Bauer from Cincinnati, outfielder George Springer from Houston, second baseman DJ Lemahieu from the Yankees and catcher J.T. Realmuto from Philadelphia.
PRO FOOTBALL: The Steelers are expecting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to be available for Sunday’s game against the Bengals. Roethlisberger and three teammates — linebacker Vince Williams, running back Jaylen Samuels and offensive lineman Jerald Hawkes — spent the week in self-quarantine after tight end Vance Mcdonald tested positive for COVID-19.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall once again was not at practice Thursday because of “personal reasons,” according to an university spokesperson. Marshall is at the center of an ongoing investigation into physical and verbal abuse allegations made by his former players.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Seton Hall has paused all team activities because of a positive COVID-19 test. The school said the person who tested positive was among the program’s “Tier 1” personnel, which consists of athletes, coaches, staff and managers.
