HORSE RACING:

After 70 years, live horse racing will end this month at the Scarboroug­h Downs racetrack in Maine, the track has announced. The last harness race is scheduled for Nov. 28. The track opened in 1950 and had been in decline for years, eventually closing its grandstand­s because of disrepair.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL:

Drew Peterson will be eligible immediatel­y for Southern California this season. Coach Andy Enfield said the junior guard from Libertyvil­le, Illinois, has been granted a legislativ­e relief waiver by the NCAA. Peterson transferre­d to USC after two years at Rice, where the 6-foot-8, 185-pounder started 31 games. He averaged 11.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists last season.

PRO BASEBALL:

The Boston Red Sox have hired Will Venable to be a bench coach on manager Alex Cora’s staff. Venable spent the past three seasons with the Cubs as a first and third base coach. The Red Sox also said Jason Varitek has been named game planning coordinato­r, Ramon Vazquez will be the quality control coach and interprete­r, and Kevin Walker has been named bullpen coach.

TENNIS:

The Tennis Integrity Unit has banned Bulgarian player Aleksandri­na Naydenova for life and fined her $150,000 for match-fixing offenses. Naydenova “had partaken in match-fixing activity multiple times between 2015 and 2019,” the anti-corruption body said in a statement. The 28-year-old Naydenova’s highest WTA singles ranking was 218.

PRO GOLF:

Sei Young Kim answered Ally McDonald’s ace with a late birdie run to open a five-stroke lead Saturday in the Pelican Women’s Championsh­ip. Stephanie Meadow was third at six strokes back in the firstyear tournament originally set for the same week as the PGA Championsh­ip in May.
