THE HOT CORNER

-

1 PRO BASKETBALL: The Toronto Raptors’ issues with the coronavirus have worsened, prompting the NBA to call off their game scheduled for Sunday night against the Chicago Bulls. The league said the Raptors are dealing with positive test results, without disclosing how many, and that combined with contact tracing issues they would not have the league-required eight players available to play.

2 PRO BASEBALL: The Royals and 3B Hunter Dozier agreed to a $25 million, four-year contract that includes a fifth-year option, a person with knowledge of the agreement told The Associated Press. The 29-year-old has long been considered a cornerstone of the Royals’ rebuild, especially after a breakthrough 2019 season in which he had 26 homers, 10 triples and 84 RBIS. But he missed the start of last season with COVID-19 and wound up hitting just .228 in 44 games.

3 COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Eric Ayala scored 22 points and Maryland led throughout in an important 73-55 win over Michigan State. The game matched a pair of hot bubble teams with Michigan State (1310, 7-10) coming in on a threegame win steak, including victories over No. 5 Illinois and No. 4 Ohio State, and Maryland (15-10, 9-9) arriving with four consecutive conference wins.

4 PRO SOCCER: Atlético Madrid beat Villarreal 2-0 to halt a slump and restore a five-point lead at the top of the Spanish league.

MOTORSPORTS: Hannu Mikkola, 5 the 1983 rally world champion who earned the nickname the “Flying Finn” and international renown in a driving career spanning more than 30 years, died in Helsinki. He was 78, and the cause of death was cancer, said his son. Mikkola started his driving career in the early 1960s but earned his reputation at world rally events in the 1970s.
