Perfect free-throw shooting lifts Georgetown over Villanova

-

Dante Harris made two free throws with 4.7 seconds left to cap a perfect game from the line for Georgetown, and the Hoyas upset No. 14 Villanova 72-71 on Thursday in New York to reach the Big East Tournament semifinals.

The eighth-seeded Hoyas (1112) will play the winner of St. John’s-seton Hall tonight at Madison Square Garden. Georgetown is in the conference semifinals for the first time since 2015.

The top-seeded Wildcats (16-6), playing without injured star Collin Gillespie, had won three straight Big East Tournament titles.

Big 12

No. 12 Oklahoma State 72, No. 10 West Virginia 69: Oklahoma State managed to squeak by West Virginia without its two biggest stars last weekend. It wasn’t any easier with Big 12 player of the year Cade Cunningham and veteran guard Isaac Likekele back from injuries.

In a back-and-forth Big 12 Tournament quarterfinal, the No. 12 Cowboys (19-7) escaped with a victory over the No. 10 Mountaineers (19-8) in Kansas City. West Virginia guard Sean Mcneil’s tying 3-pointer left his fingertips a split second after the final buzzer — splashing through the net in vain as Oklahoma State players flooded the floor to celebrate.

No. 2 Baylor 74, Kansas State 68: Macio Teague scored 24 points, Davion Mitchell added 23 and second-ranked Baylor held on to beat Kansas State and avoid what would have been one of the biggest upsets in the history of the Big 12 Tournament.

The top-seeded Bears (22-1) rolled into T-mobile Arena after their first regular-season conference title since 1950, three straight wins over ranked teams and with a No. 1 seed in next week’s NCAA Tournament nearly locked up.

The Wildcats (9-20) lost their two regular-season games to Baylor by an average of 40 points.

Big Ten

No. 9 Ohio State 79, Minnesota 75: Duane Washington Jr. and Justice Sueing each scored 16 points and No. 9 Ohio State fended off Minnesota’s late charge.

The Buckeyes (19-8) snapped a four-game losing streak and advanced to today’s quarterfinal round.

Marcus Carr scored 24 points and Jamal Mashburn Jr. finished with 18 to lead Minnesota (14-15), which lost for the eighth time in nine games.

Maryland 68, Michigan State 57: Eric Ayala scored 21 points, Aaron Wiggins added 19, and Maryland dominated Michigan State in the second half to win a first-round Big Ten Tournament game in Indianapolis.

The eighth-seeded Terrapins (1612) gave their NCAA Tournament hopes a big boost but now face top-seeded and No. 4 ranked Michigan in today’s quarterfinals. The Wolverines won both regular-season matchups by a combined 35 points.

Malik Hall scored a career-high 19 points for Michigan State (15-12), which is still expected to make the NCAA Tournament.
