1 Public access sought: Civil liberties groups are asking the Supreme Court to give the public access to opinions of the secretive court that reviews bulk email collection, internet searches without a warrant and other government surveillan­ce programs. The American Civil Liberties Union and the Knight First Amendment Institute say the public has the right to see significan­t opinions of the Foreign Intelligen­ce Surveillan­ce Court.

2 Tesla fatal crash: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administra­tion and the National Transporta­tion Safety Board said they will send investigat­ors to Spring, Texas, to look into the fiery Saturday night crash of a Tesla Model 6 car in which authoritie­s say no one was behind the wheel. Two men in the Tesla were killed. Firefighte­rs used at least 32,000 gallons of water to extinguish the flames fed by the car’s lithium-ion battery, a fire official said.

3 Wildfire under control: Firefighte­rs in Cape Town, South Africa, finally brought a wildfire under control Monday after it swept across the slopes of the city’s famed Table Mountain, forcing the evacuation of some neighborho­ods. City authoritie­s said the fire, which started early Sunday, was “largely contained.”

4 Greens choose candidate: Germany’s environmen­talist Greens have chosen co-leader Annalena Baerbock to make the party’s first bid for the chanceller­y in the country’s September election. Chancellor Angela Merkel, who leads the center-right Union bloc, vowed in 2018 not to seek a fifth four-year term.

5 Knife attack: A man witha knife attacked and wounded five people Monday at a mosque in Tirana, Albania, police said, as investigat­ors tried to determine a motive. The victims are all expected to survive.
