1 Public access sought: Civil liberties groups are asking the Supreme Court to give the public access to opinions of the secretive court that reviews bulk email collection, internet searches without a warrant and other government surveillance programs. The American Civil Liberties Union and the Knight First Amendment Institute say the public has the right to see significant opinions of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.
2 Tesla fatal crash: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board said they will send investigators to Spring, Texas, to look into the fiery Saturday night crash of a Tesla Model 6 car in which authorities say no one was behind the wheel. Two men in the Tesla were killed. Firefighters used at least 32,000 gallons of water to extinguish the flames fed by the car’s lithium-ion battery, a fire official said.
3 Wildfire under control: Firefighters in Cape Town, South Africa, finally brought a wildfire under control Monday after it swept across the slopes of the city’s famed Table Mountain, forcing the evacuation of some neighborhoods. City authorities said the fire, which started early Sunday, was “largely contained.”
4 Greens choose candidate: Germany’s environmentalist Greens have chosen co-leader Annalena Baerbock to make the party’s first bid for the chancellery in the country’s September election. Chancellor Angela Merkel, who leads the center-right Union bloc, vowed in 2018 not to seek a fifth four-year term.
5 Knife attack: A man witha knife attacked and wounded five people Monday at a mosque in Tirana, Albania, police said, as investigators tried to determine a motive. The victims are all expected to survive.
