COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall said WR Lavell Davis Jr. and LB Chico Bennett Jr. sustained ACL injuries during spring practice and will be sidelined until at least November. Davis, a sophomore, was expected to be a major contributo­r after catching 20 passes for 515 yards last season, the second-best average in the nation. He also had five TDS in eight games. Bennett, a junior transfer from Georgia Tech, was being counted on to contribute at linebacker.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Indiana and Notre Dame will end a nearly a 40-year series hiatus after school officials announced they would open the next decade with a two-game football series. Notre Dame will host Indiana on Aug. 31, 2030, the first contest between the in-state programs since September 1991. On Sept. 27, 2031, the Fighting Irish will visit Bloomingto­n, Indiana, for the first time since October 1950.

PRO SOCCER: Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho was fired by Tottenham after 17 months, leaving London without any championsh­ips. That could have changed Sunday, when Tottenham plays Manchester City in the English League Cup final, but Mourinho won’t get that chance now. Ryan Mason, who had been in charge of Tottenham’s academy, steps in to replace him.

PRO HOCKEY: The NHL suspended Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler for two games for kneeing Toronto forward Zach Hyman. Edler also will forfeit $103,448 in pay. The collision happened in Vancouver’s 3-2 win Sunday, the Canucks’ first game since March 24 after being sidelined by a COVID-19 outbreak.

HORSE RACING: Lorna Brooke, an amateur jockey who won 17 races, died Sunday in a hospital 10 days after falling during a race in England, the Injured Jockeys Fund said. She had been hospitaliz­ed since falling in Taunton on April 8.
