Buyer’s Edge Where Can I Find It?

- By Sabine Morrow For the AJC

Q: I have read with interest and amazement the finds that you have been able to identify for readers, and I hope that you will be able to assist me in finding an outlet or buyer for Mexican pottery dishes. Each dish is painted with a stylized bird and flowers, and each is slightly different from the others, so I think they might be hand-painted. The dishes are glazed and were given to me more than 50 years ago, so lead in the paint is possible. Before I can sell the dishes, I would very much like your assistance in identifying a source to test for lead. — Laura Evans, email

A: Thank you for reading, Laura. The FDA didn’t begin restricting lead in dishware until 1971, so your hand-painted and glazed crockery likely contains lead. You can check for yourself with 3M LeadCheck Swabs. These EPA-recognized swabs are non-toxic and easy to use. Crush and shake to activate, and then swab the dish. If LeadCheck turns red on contact, then you’ve got lead. Along with pottery, the swabs work on painted surfaces, steel and plastics. You can get a 2-pack of 3M LeadCheck for $6.06, an 8-pack for $19.39 at General Hardware, 4218 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, 404-2375209. The swabs are also available at most big-box home improvement retailers. If you decide to sell your dishes, consider Serendipity Antiques and Interiors, 6500 Dawson Blvd., Norcross, 678-2987800. The massive showroom features furniture along with artwork, glassware, and pottery.

Q: Can you tell me where I can find Sauer’s mustard? — Frances Maney, email

If you’re looking for a bargain, you can purchase 32-ounce jars of Sauer’s mustard for $1.35 each at Buford Highway Farmers Market, 5600 Buford Highway, Doraville, 770-455-0770.

Q: I was hoping that you could help me find someone who repairs Singer sewing machines. I inherited my mother’s 50-year-old Singer, which needs some minor repairs. Thank you. — Barbara Jesup, Dunwoody

A: Barbara, take your vintage sewing machine to Singer Service Center, 228 Ottley Drive Atlanta, 404289-3510. You don’t need an appointment.
