Q: I have read with interest and amazement the finds that you have been able to identify for readers, and I hope that you will be able to assist me in finding an outlet or buyer for Mexican pottery dishes. Each dish is painted with a stylized bird and flowers, and each is slightly different from the others, so I think they might be hand-painted. The dishes are glazed and were given to me more than 50 years ago, so lead in the paint is possible. A: Thank you for reading, Laura. The FDA didn’t begin restricting lead in dishware until 1971, so your hand-painted and glazed crockery likely contains lead. You can check for yourself with 3M LeadCheck Swabs. These EPA-recognized swabs are non-toxic and easy to use. Crush and shake to activate, and then swab the dish. If LeadCheck turns red on contact, then you’ve got lead. Along with pottery, the swabs work on painted surfaces, steel and plastics.
