Auburn comes up short at Penn State

Jaquan Brisker broke up a desperatio­n pass toward the end zone by Auburn’s Bo Nix as time expired and No. 10 Penn State held on to beat No. 22 Auburn 28-20 late Saturday.

Sean Clifford completed 28 of 32 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns as Penn State (3-0) welcomed back its white out crowd to Beaver Stadium in State College, Pennsylvan­ia, for a rare visit from an SEC team.

Auburn (2-1) managed to get to the Penn State 23 with 3 seconds left. Nix fired deep down the middle but Brisker cut in front Demetris Robertson a few steps in front of the goal line and knocked it down.

Tank Bigsby scored two rushing touchdowns and Anders Carlson added two field goals for the Tigers.

■ (At) No. 4 Oregon 48, Stony Brook 7: Freshman Ty Thompson threw two second-half TD passes and Oregon overcame a sluggish start to beat Stony Brook.

Ducks starter Anthony Brown threw for a touch- down and ran for another but left the game at halftime after he was sacked twice to close out the second quarter.

The Ducks, coming off their big win last weekend at Ohio State, improved to 3-0 as they head into Pac-12 play next weekend.

■ Fresno State 40, (at) No. 13 UCLA 37: Jake Haener threw for 455 yards, includ- ing the go-ahead touchdown pass to Jalen Cropper with 14 seconds remaining, and Fresno State topped UCLA at the Rose Bowl.

Haener overcame a crushing hit to his right hip in the fourth quarter to rally the Bulldogs. After UCLA regained the lead with 54 seconds left on Dorian Thomp- son-robinson’s 15-yard pass to Kyle Phillips, a limping Haener directed a six-play, 75-yard drive that gave the Bulldogs (3-1) their fourth straight win over the Bruins.

Haener completed 38 of 53 passes for Fresno State.

Thompson-robinson passed for 278 yards and three touchdowns while Phil- lips had seven receptions for 113 yards and two TDS.

■ No. 14 Iowa State 48, (at) UNLV 3: Brock Purdy completed 21 of 24 pass attempts for 288 yards and three touchdowns to lead Iowa State to a rout of UNLV.

Iowa State (2-1) finished with 486 yards of offense and 7.59 yards per play, scoring on eight of its 11 possession­s, including six touchdowns.

Breece Hall rushed for 70 of his 101 yards in the first quar- ter to lead the Cyclones’ rushing attack. Hall scored two touchdowns. Wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson had 10 receptions for 133 yards and two touchdowns.

UNLV (0-3) was held to 23 yards on 18 plays in the first half and finished with 130 yards for the game.

■ (At) No. 23 BYU 27, No. 19 Arizona State 17: Jaren Hall threw for 214 yards and two touchdowns and added 38 yards on seven carries, leading BYU to its third straight win over a Pac12 team.

Tyler Allgeier added 69 yards and a TD on the ground for the Cougars (3-0), who forced four turnovers and posted their third straight victory over Arizona State.

Jaylen Daniels threw for 265 yards to lead the Sun Devils (2-1), but also tossed two intercepti­ons.

SEC

■ (At) LSU 49, Central Michigan 21: Max Johnson passed for 372 yards and a career-best five touchdowns in less than three quarters, LSU defensive end Andre Anthony returned a fumble for a 33-yard score, and the Tigers topped Central Michigan (1-2).

Johnson completed 26 of 35 passes but was pulled after his final throw and his only big mistake of the night, an intercepti­on returned 20 yards for a touchdown by Central Michigan safety Devonni Reed with 5:41 left in the third quarter.

Deion Smith had touchdown catches of 28 and 40 yards in the first quarter as the Tigers (2-1) raced to a 21-0 lead.

ACC

■ (At) No. 21 North Carolina 59, Virginia 39: Sam Howell threw five touchdown passes and ran for a careerbest 112 yards as No. 21 North Carolina took over after halftime to beat Virginia.

The Tar Heels (2-1, 1-1 ACC) scored touchdowns on all five of their second-half drives, which helped turn a 28-24 halftime deficit into a 52-31 lead on Howell’s short TD throw to Kamari Morales with 12:13 left. And after a first-half shootout with Brennan Armstrong and the Cavaliers (2-1, 0-1), UNC gave up only a field goal in the third quarter.

■ (At) Wake Forest 35, Florida State 14: Sam Hartman threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns, and A.T. Perry grabbed seven passes for 155 yards and a TD as Wake Forest cruised past mistake-ridden Florida State 35-14.

Wake Forest (3-0, 1-0 ACC) rolled up 484 yards of total offense, including 225 on the ground. Florida State (0-3, 0-1), which juggled Mckenzie Milton and Jordan Travis at quarterbac­k, committed six turnovers.

■ (At) Duke 30, Northweste­rn 23: Duke (2-1) did all its scoring in the first half, then held off a Northweste­rn (1-2) comeback.

The Blue Devils scored on six of their first eight possession­s behind Gunnar Holmberg, who completed 31 of 44 passes for 314 yards and a touchdown.

■ (At) N.C. State 45, Furman 7: Devin Leary threw for three TDS and ran for another as North Carolina State geared up for the ACC season by beating Furman (2-1). Zonovan Knight ran for 104 yards and a touchdown for the Wolfpack (2-1).
