Aid for Afghanista­n: 1 The U.S. has agreed to provide humanitari­an aid to a desperatel­y poor Afghanista­n on the brink of economic disaster, while refusing to give political recognitio­n to the country’s Taliban rulers, the Taliban said Sunday. The statement came at the end of the first direct talks since the chaotic withdrawal of U.S. troops at the end of August. There was no immediate comment from the U.S.

Deadly shootout at 2

bar: One woman died and 14 people were wounded after a shootout at a St. Paul, Minn., bar early Sunday. Police arrived to a chaotic scene at Seventh Street Truck Park to find more than a dozen gunshot victims. Police have arrested three men, ages 33, 32 and 29, who were injured in the shootout and taken to area hospitals for treatment.

Suspect shot: A man 3 who allegedly assaulted and gravely injured a metro Phoenix sheriff’s deputy was shot and wounded by a homeowner with whom he had a history of conflicts, authoritie­s said Sunday. Maricopa County Sheriff’s officials said the suspect was hospitaliz­ed in critical condition while the deputy was on life support.the suspect was shot Saturday night at a home 52 miles west of Phoenix.

4 Quake hits Hawaii:

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Big Island in Hawaii on Sunday, rattling residents and causing items to fall off shelves. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a depth of nearly 11 miles. The National Weather Service in Honolulu said there was no tsunami threat. Residentso­f Oahu reported feeling the shaking.
