PRO GOLF: Phil Mickelson won for the third time in four career PGA Tour Champions starts, closing with a 4-under 68 for a two-shot victory over Miguel Angel Jimenez on Sunday in Jacksonville, Fla. Mickelson, 51, won for the first time since his triumph at the PGA Championship in May. He has struggled on the PGA Tour since then, and this was his first Champions event since February.
PRO TENNIS: Top seeds Daniil Medvedev and Karolina Pliskova rolled to straight-set wins at the BNP Paribas Open late Saturday. Medvedev beat American Mackenzie Mcdonald 6-4, 6-2 in Indian Wells, Calif. Pliskova advanced with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Magdalena Frech. Fifth-seeded Garbine Muguruza was the highest-seeded woman to lose — 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 to Ajla Tomljanovic.
RUNNING: Seifu Tura Abdiwak of 3
Ethiopia and Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya won in the return of the Chicago Marathon, scrapped last year amid the pandemic. Abdiwak finished in 2 hours, 6 minutes, 12 seconds. American Galen Rupp was second in 2:06:35. Chepngetich took the women’s race in 2:22:31. Emma Bates of the U.S. was second at 2:24:20.
PRO HOCKEY: The Rangers and 4 top center Mika Zibanejad agreed to an eight-year contract worth $68 million. The 28-year-old Swede was almost a point-agame player last season with 24 goals and 26 assists in 50 games.
PRO HOCKEY: NHL teams must 5 get their rosters down to 23 players by this afternoon and there’s no indication from the Sam Jose Sharks as to how they’ll proceed with Evander Kane. Kane, being investigated by the NHL over two matters, has stayed away from the team throughout training camp. One league inquiry centers around possible use of a fake COVID-19 vaccination card, and the other involves accusations of physical and sexual abuse raised by Kane’s estranged wife.
