1 PRO SOCCER: Kelley O’Hara scored in the 97th minute, and the Washington Spirit won the National Women’s Soccer League championsh­ip with a 2-1 extra-time victory over the Chicago Red Stars on Saturday. The championsh­ip game closes a tumultuous ninth season for the league. The Spirit played under interim coach Kris Ward after Richie Burke was fired for violating the league’s antiharass­ment policy. It was the first league championsh­ip for the Spirit.

PRO SOCCER: Lionel Messi

2 scored his first goal in the French league as Paris Saint-Germain beat Nantes 3-1 on Saturday. Messi sealed PSG’s win in the 87th minute. Messi, who joined from Barcelona this summer, had already scored three Champions League goals for his new team but had failed to find the net in five previous Ligue 1 appearance­s.

AUTO RACING: Lewis Hamilton

3 and Max Verstappen qualified 1-2 for the inaugural Qatar Grand Prix, setting up a showdown between the Formula One championsh­ip contenders at the start of today’s race. Hamilton trails Verstappen by 14 points in the championsh­ip fight with three races to go. He beat Verstappen by 0.455 seconds Saturday to win the pole at Losail Internatio­nal Circuit.

PRO HOCKEY: Anaheim Ducks

4 forward Max Comtois will be out for about six weeks after surgery on his right hand. Comtois had the procedure Thursday to repair a broken bone in his hand. The 22-year-old Comtois had missed three games due to the injury. He was the Ducks’ leading scorer during the 2020-21 season but has just one assist in 13 games this year.

PRO BASKETBALL: Cavs guard

Collin Sexton underwent seasonendi­ng surgery for a meniscus tear in his left knee, the team said late Friday. The surgery was performed at Emory University Sports Medicine Center in Atlanta. Sexton averaged 16 points in 11 games this season, second on the team.
