Buyer’s Edge Where Can I Find It?

- By Sabine Morrow For the AJC

Q: I’ve been trying to find a candy bar called Bounty. It’s a dark chocolate bar like Mounds. I’m not sure who makes it. Thank you. — Daryl Santilli, Lawrenceville

A: Bounty candy bar was launched in 1951 in the U.K. by Mars Inc. as a milk chocolate bar filled with sweetened shredded coconut. It comes in a light blue wrapper. Later, the company offered a dark chocolate Bounty distinguished from the milk chocolate version by its red wrapper. Like Mounds and Almond Joy, Bounty comes as two pieces per package; however,

the former were staples far longer than Bounty. Peter Paul Halajian immigrated to the U.S. from Armenia and introduced Mounds in 1921 and Almond Joy in 1946. Hershey’s now makes Almond Joy and Mounds. You’ll find dark and milk chocolate Bounty bars for $1.75

each at Taste of Britain, 73 S. Peachtree St., Norcross, 770-242-8585.

Q: I have several handbags with shoulder straps that are unraveling. Is there somewhere I can take these to get them replaced? — Dorothy Vick, Smyrna

A: Dorothy, take your ailing handbags to Atlanta Luggage and Repair, 227 Sandy Springs Place NE, Atlanta, 770-649-1942, and have owner Teyla Abramova take a look at them. Abramova learned the trade from the original owners who had Atlanta Luggage and Repair for more than 40 years, and she recently bought the business. Services include repairing handbags, laptop and musical instrument cases, golf bags, and fixing broken zippers, hinges, and clasps.

Q: I have an old book — more than 350 years old, I think, and I would like to talk to somebody who could tell me its value. Thank you. — Bob Brinson, Rome

A:

Bob, you can begin by calling Frank Walsh, an Atlanta-based rare book dealer and appraiser who, in 1971, opened Yesteryear Book Shop in Buckhead. He is a member of both the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America and the Georgia Antiquarian

Booksellers Association. Walsh, whose passion is adding to his vast collection on the history of commerce in the South, dating back to colonial times, can help you get information about your book or at least connect you to another expert if he can’t find what you need.
