1 SKIING: Austria’s Matthias Mayer won the World Cup men’s downhill Saturday. Fellow Austrian Vincent Kreichmayr was second, followed by Switzerland’s Beat Feuz. Saturday’s race was the season opener after a downhill scheduled for Friday was canceled because of too much snow. Today’s super-G caps the weekend for men’s World Cup. The women arrive in Alberta next week for two downhills and a super-G at the resort in Banff National Park.
2 SKIING: A women’s World Cup giant slalom was canceled Saturday due to poor weather. The race in Killington, Vermont, marked the return of World Cup skiing to North America for the first time in two years. However, after just nine competitors completed their first runs, the race was halted amid strong winds and snow. There is a slalom scheduled for today.
3 PRO BASKETBALL: Houston Rockets guard John Wall has expressed hope to the team that he can resume playing soon, ESPN. com reported Saturday. Wall and the Rockets had agreed on him sitting out until a trade could be found, but the five-time All-Star talked to Houston GM Rafael Stone on Friday about restarting discussions on a return to the active roster, ESPN said.
4 PRO GOLF: The fifth installment of the made-for-TV golf competition “The Match”on Friday paired frequent feuders Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau at the Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas. Koepka hit a precise approach shot to close it out with a 4 and 3 victory on the ninth hole. There were no significant moments of tension or any real contretemps, just the usual pleasantries and civil interactions accompanying a golf round.
5 PRO HOCKEY: Rangers forward Artemi Panarin was fined $5,000 Saturday for throwing one of his gloves at Bruins winger Brad Marchand. The fine is the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement.
