THE HOT CORNER
GYMNASTICS: Three-time Olympic gold medal gymnast Kohei Uchimura of Japan — the man they call “King Kohei”— is retiring, his management company said Tuesday. The 33-year-old won gold in 2012 and 2016 as the best all-around men’s gymnast and also won a team gold in 2016. He also won four Olympic silver medals and won gold 10 times at world championships.
PRO HOCKEY: Dallas Stars coach Rick Bowness was fined $25,000 for twice slamming a stick against the boards behind the bench, seconds after his team’s 2-1 loss at St. Louis on Sunday. The Blues scored two power-play goals in the final minute, the 11th time in NHL history that a team won in regulation after trailing by one with a minute left.
OLYMPICS: German prosecutors will drop an animal cruelty investigation into an athlete and a coach who were shown striking a horse during the Olympic modern pentathlon last year. The investigation will be dropped once athlete Annika Schleu and coach Kim Raisner have paid an agreed sum to an unnamed charitable organization, prosecutors in the eastern city of Potsdam said Tuesday.
OLYMPICS: Snowboard champion Patrizia Kummer will head to the Beijing Games early to spend three weeks in quarantine because she isn’t vaccinated against the coronavirus, she said Tuesday.
SKIING: Mikaela Shiffrin won the last women’s World Cup slalom before the Beijing Olympics, while Slovakian rival Petra Vlhova locked up the season title. Racing on the challenging Planai course in Austria, the American improved from fifth place, posting the fastest time with an all-attacking run to beat first-run leader Vlhova by 0.15 seconds. Germany’s Lena Dürr finished 0.93 behind in third.
