PRO BASEBALL: Jim Riggleman was hired Wednesday as manager of the Billings Mustangs of the independen­t Pioneer League. The 69-year-old takes over for Joe Kruzel, who left to become a minor league coordinato­r with the Los Angeles Angels. Riggleman has a 726-904 record as manager of San Diego (1992-94), the Chicago Cubs (1995-99), Seattle (2008), Washington (2009-11), and Cincinnati (2015-18).

PRO BASEBALL: Former Yankee 2 outfielder Gerald Williams died Tuesday morning after a battle with cancer. Williams was 55. Williams played 14 years in the big leagues, half that time with the Yankees, but also with the Brewers, Braves, Rays and Mets.

PRO HOCKEY: Hall of Fame

3 defenseman Scott Niedermaye­r has joined the Anaheim Ducks’ front office as a special advisor to the hockey operations department. Niedermaye­r was the captain of Anaheim’s only Stanley Cup-winning team in 2007. Niedermaye­r played his final five NHL seasons with the Ducks before his retirement in 2010.

PRO SOCCER: Lyon sold

4 attacking midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri to Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire for $8 million on Wednesday. The Switzerlan­d internatio­nal agreed to a threeyear contract. Shaquiri will be a designated player whose salary will count only partially against the league’s salary cap. Chicago said he is the most expensive transfer signing in the team’s history but did not specify the amount.

PRO FOOTBALL: The Patriots

5 are bringing back Joe Judge as an offensive assistant less than a month after he was fired as head coach of the Giants. Judge, who served as an assistant in New England for eight seasons, rejoins coach Bill Belichick’s coaching staff after going 10-23 over two seasons in New York.
