The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Whether for exercise, commutes or toting kids, there’s a bike for every need.
Spring arrives this month and with it, daylight saving time, which means more hours of sunshine. To celebrate the season and get in shape, keep workouts simple and on your own time by biking.
“Cycling is a great fitness activity because it is less stressful on the body and allows for a full body workout, including legs, core and upper body,” says Kenneth Oladapo, owner and lead mechanic of Clutch Bicycle Shop in Atlanta. “Cycling is also something people can do at any age and offers the benefits of exercise, transportation and the ability to enjoy being outdoors.”
To get a leg up on actually biking outdoors — no shade to Peloton’s virtual outdoor scenic biking — check out the following seven brands and shops, a mix of bikes that can be bought at big-box retailers, customizable ones available for purchase online and local bike shops that sell and rent bikes. Bike rentals are great for casual, noncommittal workouts; act as a supplement to an at-home or in-gym fitness regimen; or calorie-burning joyrides with friends.
There are commuter bikes for folks who use their two wheels for working out and heading to work or doing errands. There’s a road bike that’s great for daily use as well as popping wheelies. And parents of young children who want to establish a fitness routine this spring can opt for a cargo bike that gets the job of exercising and carting around goods done. And according to a recent report by AAA, the nationwide average for regular gas was $4.26 a gallon and $4.19 in Georgia, which makes biking, for short and long commutes, a budget-friendly option.
One last thing: Remember to be safe and
wear a helmet at all times.

■ One-stop shop. Head
to Clutch Bicycle Shop, which caters to all types of riders, including beginners, commuters, racers and children. According to owner Oladapo, hybrid bikes, which have the geometry of a road bike and comfort seating of a mountain bike, are best for riding in town. Cyclists can test-ride a fitness regimen by renting, but when it’s time to purchase, he recommends coming in for a custom fit since the shop has a bevy of sizes to accommodate different heights. Team members are also available to discuss individual cycling goals so all customers get just the right bike for their needs. The shop also offers accessories like cleaning kits, baskets and bells, plus gear like backpacks, jerseys and gloves, but Oladapo names the four must-have accessories: a helmet for safety, bike pump because “tires lose air faster than you think,” lock to keep your bike from “running away” and lights so cyclists can be seen day and night. Prices vary. 1384 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd. SW, Atlanta. 404-594-4205, clutchbicycleshop.com.

The bike is also jampacked with extras to inspire more riding: a cup holder conveniently placed on the handlebar, a basket for transporting goods and rear rack to place books or a backpack.
