1 PRO BASEBALL: Tom Hanks will help launch a new era of Cleveland baseball. The Oscar-winning actor will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Guardians’ home opener against the San Francisco Giants on April 15. It will be Cleveland’s first home game since dropping Indians, the team’s name since 1915. Hanks has backed Cleveland’s major league team since the late 1970s, when he was an intern in the Great Lakes Shakespear­e Festival.

PRO BASEBALL: The Toronto Blue 2

Jays extended manager Charlie Montoyo’s contract through the 2023 season Friday. Montoyo, 57, has overseen a tumultuous period in Blue Jays history, with the team playing home games in three cities last season. Toronto also played its 2020 home schedule at its Triple-a stadium in Buffalo. Montoyo has a 190-194 record in three seasons with Toronto.

SWIMMING: Two-time Olympic 3 medalist Lea Maurer was named head coach of Southern California’s men’s and women’s swimming teams Friday, making her the first woman to lead both programs. Maurer had served as interim head coach after Jeremy Kipp was placed on administra­tive leave by the university last fall amid allegation­s of abusive behavior toward athletes. He resigned in March.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL:

Purdue’s Trevion Williams has announced he will sign with an agent and enter the NBA draft. Williams is the only player in Purdue history to score at least 1,400 points with 900 rebounds and 200 assists. He did so while starting only 60 of his 130 career games.

PRO SOCCER: Hope Solo was

5 arrested Friday afternoon in North Carolina and charged with driving while intoxicate­d. Police said the U.S. soccer legend was passed out behind the wheel of a parked car in Winston-salem. Solo’s two children were in the car.
