1 COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL: Thad Matta is returning to Butler, hired to coach the Bulldogs almost five years after he cited his health while stepping down at Ohio State. The 54-year-old led Butler to a 24-8 record and an appearance in the 2001 NCAA Tournament during his only season as head coach at his alma mater, then had successful runs at Xavier and Ohio State. Matta spent the 2021-22 season as an associate athletic director for basketball administra­tion at Indiana.

2 COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL: St. John’s junior Julian Champagnie is entering the NBA draft. The two-time all-big East first team selection announced he plans to give up the rest of his college eligibilit­y and hire an agent.

3 PRO SOCCER: Matt Polster scored a decisive own goal and Carlos Miguel stopped five shots as the New York Red Bulls earned a 1-0 road victory Saturday over New England . ... Ilie Sanchez scored for Los Angeles FC in a 4-2 road win over Orlando. Sanchez put LAFC ahead for good at 3-2 in the 51st minute. LAFC also got one goal each from Kwadwo Opoku, Jesus Murillo and Brian Rodriguez . ... Lalas Abubakar scored the tying goal for Colorado in a 1-1 tie with Real Salt Lake.

4 PRO SOCCER: New England Revolution coach Bruce Arena said goalkeeper Matt Turner suffered frostbite during the U.S. national team’s World Cup qualifier in Minnesota but is sidelined with an unrelated injury. Turner tweeted that the Feb. 2 World Cup qualifier in frigid weather “has nothing to do with what’s kept me off the field these last few weeks.”

5 RUNNING: Judith Jeptum, of Kenya, broke the Paris marathon record while Deso Gelmisa, of Ethiopia, won the men’s race. Jeptum finished in 2 hours, 19 minutes and 48 seconds, a personal best. Gelmisa finished in 2:05:07.
