PRO TENNIS: John Millman tainted Dominic Thiem’s return from injury by beating the Austrian 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the first round of the Serbia Open on Tuesday. Thiem was playing his first tourlevel match since injuring his right wrist last June, and the former world No. 3 showed some signs of encouragem­ent before Millman prevailed in just over two and a half hours.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Big man Mark Williams is the first of Duke’s multiple NBA prospects to say he’s leaving to enter the draft. The 7-foot-1, 242-pound sophomore announced his decision in a social media video Monday evening. Ranked as the No. 18 draft prospect by ESPN, Williams was an elite rim protector last season and a finalist for national defensive player of the year.

Jaquez Jr. said Monday he will return to UCLA for his senior season, keeping him in Westwood for the debut of his sister, Gabriela, with the women’s basketball team. The guard-forward from nearby Camarillo earned firstteam All-pac-12 honors last season. Jaquez has averaged 11.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 97 games over three seasons.

Internatio­nal captain Trevor Immelman (South Africa) announced Tuesday his four assistant captains will be K.J. Choi (South Korea), Geoff Ogilvy (Australia), Mike Weir (Canada) and Camilo Villegas (Colombia). The matches are scheduled for Sept. 22-25 at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.

PRO SOCCER: Cristiano Ronaldo 5 did not play for Manchester United at Liverpool on Tuesday after the death of one of his newborn twins. The boy’s death was announced on Monday.
