Teen dies outside apartment complex after shooting at another complex
A teenager shot in an exchange of gunfire at a southeast Atlanta apartment complex ended up dead Tuesday morning at another complex a mile away, police said.
The victim was discovered at the Forest Cove Apartments on New Town Circle around 3 a.m. According to Atlanta police, the 17-year-old is connected to another investigation at the nearby Skylark apartment complex on Boulevard, where gunfire was reported around the same time.
He was identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office as Treveon Potts of Atlanta.
A second gunshot victim, reported to be stable, was taken to a hospital, police Maj. Carlo Peek said from the Forest Cove scene.
Investigators determined the two were shot at the Skylark when someone interrupted a group of people breaking into vehicles. Police have not confirmed if they are the break-in suspects.
“We know there were some vehicle break-ins, and there was possible gunfire at that location as well,” Peek said.
At Forest Cove, a body was found outside a gray Jeep Gladiator. Peek said investigators believe Potts arrived at the complex in the Gladiator and died soon after. Peek did not know if the vehicle was reported stolen.
The incident is the latest in a string of violent crimes at the dilapidated Forest Cove complex, which is in the process of relocating residents ahead of its pending demolition. The city of Atlanta, in its lawsuit against the property management company, said Forest Cove has been the site of more than 650 police calls related to domestic violence, burglary, robbery and homicide since 2020.
