THE HOT CORNER

-

1 PRO SOCCER: With his team’s Champions League qualification ambitions in ruins, “disastrous” was how Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka summed up a 2-0 loss to Newcastle on Monday that left Tottenham in charge of the race between the London rivals for a top-four finish in the English Premier League. Arsenal buckled under the pressure of its biggest match of the season, with an owngoal by Ben White and a late strike by Bruno Guimarães capping a dominant display by Newcastle.

2 PRO BASEBALL: RHP Johnny Cueto, 36, is back in the majors with the White Sox. Cueto was brought up from Triple-a Charlotte. He spent the previous six seasons with San Francisco, going 7-7 with a 4.08 ERA in 22 games last year. Cueto broke into the majors with Cincinnati in 2008 and went 135-97 with a 3.45 ERA over his first 14 years in the big leagues.

3 PRO BASEBALL: Yankees LHP Nestor Cortes said he has deactivated his Twitter account after screenshots surfaced of tweets from a decade ago that included racial slurs. Cortes appeared to be quoting rap lyrics in some of the tweets, and he did not seem to be using the words to demean anyone directly. “It’s not acceptable,” he said. “I think I could have managed myself and said stuff differently.”

4 PRO BASEBALL: Astros RHP Jake Odorizzi collapsed with a leg injury while running to cover first base Monday against the Red Sox and was taken off the field on a stretcher. Manager Dusty Baker said Odorizzi would get an MRI.

5 MEN’S LUGE: Olympic champion Johannes Ludwig of Germany announced his retirement from competitive sliding, doing so after winning two gold medals — one in men’s singles, the other in the team relay — at the Beijing Games in February. He also was the overall World Cup champion this past season.
