PRO BASEBALL: Red Sox closer Matt Barnes was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with right shoulder inflammati­on, and left-hander Matt Strahm was activated from the COVID-19 IL prior to a game against Cincinnati. An All-star in 2021, Barnes struggled down the stretch last season and has failed to regain his best form. The 31-year-old has a 7.94 ERA in 20 appearance­s, going 0-3 with two saves.

PRO BASEBALL: Blue Jays

2 left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu exited his start Wednesday against the White Sox after four innings because of tightness in his forearm. Ryu is 2-0 with a 5.33 ERA in six starts. He missed 24 games in April and May because of soreness in his forearm, but he had gone 2-0 with a 1.72 ERA in his past three starts since returning May 14 at Tampa Bay.

COLLEGE GOLF: Texas won

Travis Vick two-putted from 30 feet on the 18th hole to beat Cameron Sisk and Texas won its fourth national championsh­ip by holding off Arizona State for a 3-2 victory on Wednesday. Texas lost the 2019 title to Stanford, in part, because of the weather. Prediction­s of severe storms pushed tee times up to just before dawn and the Longhorns were out of sorts in the 3-2 loss.

PRO SOCCER: Real Madrid’s

1-0 victory over Liverpool in the Champions League final set a record for the largest audience to view the final in the U.S. on English-language television. Nielsen ratings show the game Saturday averaged 2.76 million viewers on CBS, surpassing the previous mark of 2.6 million for the 2011 final between Barcelona and Manchester United on Fox.
