THE HOT CORNER

-

1 PRO GOLF: Adrian Meronk became Poland’s first winner on the European tour Sunday with a superb closing stretch at Mount Juliet for a 6-under 66 and a three-shot victory in the Irish Open at Thomastown. Meronk was one shot behind Ryan Fox of New Zealand with four holes remaining when he went birdiebirdie-eagle to give himself room for error on the tough closing hole. He made par and walked off the 18th green soaked in a champagne celebration.

2 PRO HOCKEY: The Tampa Bay Lightning traded defenseman Ryan Mcdonagh to the Nashville Predators, clearing significant salary cap space. They received defenseman Philippe Myers and forward prospect Grant Mismash in the deal. Exchanging Mcdonagh’s $6.75 million cap hit for Myers’ $2.55 million could allow the Eastern Conference champs to bring back top left winger and playoff star Ondrej Palat and possibly defenseman Jan Rutta, who like Palat was set to be a free agent when the market opens July 13.

3 PRO BASEBALL: Yankees rookie reliever Ron Marinaccio went on the 15-day injured list with shoulder inflammation, leaving a solid bullpen without a key piece. Marinaccio has been terrific since being called up May 21, pitching 151/3 scoreless innings and allowing just an infield single with 17 strikeouts. To take his spot, the Yankees recalled JP Sears (3-0, 122/3 scoreless innings in three previous stints this season).

4 PRO HOCKEY: The Winnipeg Jets hired Rick Bowness, 67, as the eighth head coach in franchise history. Bowness began his coaching career with the Jets, with 28 games running the bench to close the 1988-89 season.

5 PRO BASEBALL: Mookie Betts is back in his familiar leadoff and right field spot for the Dodgers, activated off the injured list before Sunday’s game vs. San Diego.
