1 SOCCER: Julie Grosso scored a pair of goals and Canada went on to rout Trinidad and Tobago 6-0 Tuesday night in Monterrey, Mexico, in a group stage match at the CONCACF W Championsh­ip. The W Championsh­ip serves as qualifying for next summer’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Christine Sinclair scored her 190th career goal, an ongoing internatio­nal record among women and men.

2 PRO BASEBALL: Bruce Meyer was promoted to deputy executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Associatio­n on Wednesday after leading the union’s negotiatio­ns during a 99day lockout that ended in March. Meyer, 61, a longtime sports law attorney and litigator, was hired in August 2018 as senior director of collective bargaining and legal.

3 COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Grambling State has fired firstyear volleyball coach Chelsey Lucas amid an investigat­ion into her pulling scholarshi­ps from incumbent players, but has not reinstated players who’ve been cut since Lucas’ hiring last February. Athletic director Trayvean Scott said the 12 scholarshi­p players who were on the team at the time of Lucas’ firing would retain their status at least through next season.

4 PRO BASKETBALL: The Lakers are adding center Thomas Bryant in free agency. Bryant, 24, spent his rookie season with the team after being selected in the second round of the 2017 NBA draft. Bryant is expected to compete for a spot in the Lakers’ starting lineup, sources said. Bryant has shown the ability to be a stretchfiv­e, making more than 40% of his 3-point tries during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.

5 PRO HOCKEY: Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom intends to play next season, Capitals general manager Brian Maclellan told reporters Wednesday.
