Pineda provides injury updates for rehabbing players
Atlanta United manager Gonzalo Pineda provided several injury updates Friday ahead of Sunday’s game against D.C. United at Mercedes-benz Stadium.
Goalkeepers Brad Guzan and Dylan Castanheira (both with Achilles ruptures), centerback Miles Robinson (also an Achilles rupture) and midfielder Ozzie Alonso (torn ACL) are out withseason-ending injuries. Midfielders Matheus Rossetto (ankle) and Emerson Hyndman (quad) have been out for the past several weeks.
Guzan, 37, has been the most visible of the players going through rehab at the team’s training facility. He also traveled with the team to last week’s game at Colum- bus. He can be seen rehab- bing, sometimes doing train- ing drills, whenever there is media availability. He is expected to return next season. He has made 150 appear- ances in regular-season and playoff games for the team. He suffered his injury April 16 in a home match against Cincinnati.
Guzan, the team’s captain before suffering his injury, can’t play this season because he was put on the season-ending injury list.
“I know he’s been very good in progressing,” Pineda said.
Robinson, 25, also is progressing well, according to Pineda. Robinson has trav- eled with the team to at least one recent game at Cincinnati. He has posted videos of some parts of his rehab on social media and has participated in functions for supporters. Robinson, who has made nine appearances, including eight starts, suffered his injury May 7 against Chicago at Mercedes-benz Stadium.
“How fast they can be back, I still don’t know,” Pineda said. “And especially with this type of résumé. It’s hard to predict targets.”
Alonso suffered his injury April 2 at D.C. United. Atlanta United won three and drew one of its first six games when he was in the lineup. Pineda said he thinks Alonso, who is 36, will try to return next season.
Pineda said Rossetto is not ready to rejoin training. He described the Brazilian’s injury as “awkward” and that when he is pain-free he will rejoin training. Rossetto hasn’t participated in the team’s past three games. He has made 20 appearances, including 18 starts, this season.
Also likely not to rejoin the team soon is Hyndman. Pineda said the team is waiting on him to be pain-free, too. Hyndman has nine appearances, including two starts, this season.
