1 TENNIS: Australian Open semifinali­st Tommy Paul and the man who eliminated Rafael Nadal at Melbourne Park, Mackenzie Mcdonald, are among the players picked by interim captain David Nainkin for the U.S. Davis Cup team’s matches at Uzbekistan next week. Nainkin’s appointmen­t was announced Friday, three weeks after Mardy Fish’s tenure as captain ended. The other members of the U.S. roster are Denis Kudla, Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek.

PRO CYCLING: Three-time world 2 champion Peter Sagan will ride a farewell season of World Tour road races and then target the mountain bike event at the 2024 Paris Olympics before retiring. The Slovakian rider announced his plans on his 33rd birthday. He is targeting a last Tour de France in July. He has won a record seven green jerseys at the event, but never an Olympic medal.

PRO BASEBALL: Ray Herbert,

3 a 1962 All-star Game winning pitcher who threw batting practice for his hometown Detroit Tigers for decades after retiring, died in Michigan on Dec. 20 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 93. Herbert started his big league career with Detroit in 1950 and pitched for four teams over 14 seasons, including a ’63 season for the Chicago White Sox in which he led the American League in shutouts.

PRO SOCCER: Sean Johnson is the new goalkeeper for Toronto FC. The 33-year-old free agent spent the past six seasons with New York City FC. Johnson played all 34 regular-season matches for NYC last year with a career-high 14 clean sheets. He won an MLS Cup in 2021.
