THE HOT CORNER
1 BASEBALL: New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes will miss next month’s World Baseball Classic due to a strained right hamstring but hasn’t ruled out being ready for the start of the regular season. Cortes said the injury is a low Grade 2 strain and he will be shut down at least a couple of weeks. Cortes first felt a tweak a week ago while running sprints at home.
2 PRO BASKETBALL: Newly acquired Golden State guard Gary Payton II will be out for at least a month as he fully recovers from offseason surgery for a core muscle injury, and Warriors general manager Bob Myers is awaiting a decision from the NBA on whether the Trail Blazers withheld anything on Payton’s health before trading him. Myers is hoping the defensive guard will be able to return before the playoffs.
3 PRO BASKETBALL: A person familiar with the negotiations said the Cleveland Cavaliers will sign swingman Danny Green once he clears waivers. A three-time NBA champion, Green began his pro career with Cleveland in 2009.
4 COLLEGE BASKETBALL:
Former Michigan State player Keith Appling has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and a firearm charge in the fatal shooting of a Detroit man. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Appling, 31, pleaded guilty Monday to one count each of second-degree murder and felony firearm in the killing of Clyde Edmonds. Prosecutors say Appling fatally shot Edmonds in May 2021 after the men argued over a handgun.
5 PRO SOCCER: Borussia
Dortmund will be without Youssoufa Moukoko for about six weeks, ruling the German forward out of the Champions League match against Chelsea on Wednesday. Moukoko sustained an ankle ligament injury in Saturday’s Bundesliga game against Werder Bremen.
