1 Report: Meta planning more layoffs: Meta Platforms, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, is planning a fresh round of layoffs and will cut thousands of employees as soon as this week, according to people familiar with the matter. The world’s largest social networking company is eliminatin­g more jobs, on top of a 13% reduction in November, in a bid to become more efficient. In its first major layoff, Meta slashed 11,000 workers.

2 Justice Department sues to stop airline merger: The Biden administra­tion sued Tuesday to block Jetblue Airways’ $3.8 billion purchase of Spirit Airlines, saying the deal would reduce competitio­n and drive up air fares for consumers. The Justice Department said the tie-up would especially hurt cost-conscious travelers who depend on Spirit to find cheaper options than they can find on other airlines.

3 Conductor killed in train-truck collision: A train and a dump truck collided early Tuesday in Cleveland, killing the train conductor as he stood on the outside of a car, authoritie­s said. The crash happened about 1:30 a.m. when the dump truck — carrying a full load of limestone — moved forward and hit the front left side of the train as it moved through a crossing, police said.

4 Japan launch fails: Japan’s space agency destroyed a new H3 rocket minutes after its launch Tuesday because the ignition failed for the second stage of the country’s first new rocket series in more than two decades. Coming three weeks after an aborted launch due to a separate glitch, the H3’s failure is seen as a major setback for Japan’s space program.

5 Hershey plans vegan offering: Peanut butter cups are getting the vegan treatment. Hershey says its Reese’s Plant Based Peanut Butter Cups, which go on sale this month, will be its first vegan chocolates sold nationally.
