Get away to charming Sevierville

Find out why this Tennessee town makes a perfect weekend escape for Georgia residents.

-

The Smoky Mountains are calling. With national parks and rivers, theme parks and lakes, historic downtowns, and restaurants both established and new, it’s hard not to answer.

At the foothills of the Great Smokies, you’ll find Sevierville, Tennessee, a town steeped in natural beauty and history. And, it’s a perfect spot to call home for a weekend getaway. There is a certain pride of place that runs through the town. Perhaps it’s because it is the birthplace of country icon Dolly Parton, whose statue graces the historic courthouse lawn. Perhaps it’s because it’s nestled so intimately in the arms of the stunning Great Smokies. Perhaps it’s the vibrancy of its people, many of whom have been here for generations and imbue their loyalty and love in some of the nation’s best restaurants, bars and lodgings. Most likely, it’s all of these things and more.

Start planning your perfect weekend getaway with these notto-miss Sevierville spots. You are sure to love what you discover.

At the heart

If you want to get a deep sense of what makes Sevierville so special, head downtown first. Downtown Sevierville is the beating heart of the area. Its recent renovations still point to an early 1900s birth, with wide sidewalks, flower-filled garden beds, and benches. But there is a certain hipness to the area now, an eclectic mix of the old and new.

Be open to wandering a bit. That’s how you’ll come across the stunning public art that transforms the historic downtown into a spot rooted in charm. There are statues, sculptures and building murals that will each speak to you about Sevierville, both where it’s been and where it’s going. Be sure to stop by Pinkie Mistry’s “Wings of Wander” for a selfie. This mural will metamorphose you into a giant monarch butterfly.

Now open, The Pines, a historic theatre that first housed rising stars such as Dolly Parton, June Carter Cash and Chet Atkins, has been renewed. From the dark woods of the full bar to the luxe leather couches for lounging and visiting over cold drinks and delicious food, The Pines is made for stopping in and staying awhile. Come ready to play with duckpin bowling, giant Jenga and retro video games. As they say, “Come hungry. Come thirsty. Leave happy.”

Other recommended options for dining include Apple Valley Creamery, which offers handmade ice cream, freshly baked bread and unique gifts. There’s also Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant & Farmhouse Grill, where every meal comes with a complimentary single serving of apple cinnamon muffins, apple fritters, homemade apple butter, and applewood julep. And don’t forget the new Pinchy’s Lobster and Beer on Court Avenue. You are sure to come back for their take on fresh New England seafood in the Smokies. Be sure to grab a seat in the Beer Garden. It’s open year-round and your furry friends are welcome. Then order a bite or two (you won’t be able to stop at just one) off their menu. The Connecticut Lobster Roll is a fan favorite with its chunks of buttery lobster and house-made brioche bun.

Live the lake life

There’s nothing like hitting the lake to bring on the vacation vibes. Just a few miles northeast of Sevierville, you’ll find Douglas Lake and its 550 miles of shoreline and 30,400 acres of splashfilled bliss. Whether you’re in or on the water, you’re sure to be enjoying the best the lake has to offer.

Go for a swim anywhere along the reservoir. You’ll find sandy beaches, charming coves and secluded islands to explore. The best part? You’re sure to find the swimming spots and beaches uncrowded.

If you prefer to cool off with crafts on the water, be sure to check out paddleboards, kayaks, pontoon boats or jet ski rentals. Douglas Lake is well-equipped to get you on the water quickly and safely in whatever form you are daring to try with life jackets, lake maps, and half- or fullday rentals.

Get that tackle box in gear and try your hand at fishing. Douglas Lake is filled with white, striped and spotted bass. With a fishing license, you can cast off from the shore or from a rented boat. If you are hoping to get a little guidance on what bait to use and where are the best-kept fishing spots on the lake, consider hiring an expert angler.

If you’re looking for lake views, you’ve come to the right spot. The Rankin Bottoms Wildlife Management Area offers spectacular vistas of sky, mountains, and lake. You are also almost guaranteed the spotting of the lake’s feathered population, with the double-crested cormorant, great blue heron, great egret and more making their homes nearby. Pack those binoculars.

Looking for more scenic views? Be sure to stop by the Douglas Dam Overlook to get a closer view of the World War II-era construction that was built in a record-setting time of just over one year. Today, this dam creates 111 megawatts of hydropower.

Explore underground

Go underground for a bit of an adventure. Forbidden Caverns opens every year April 1. The caverns are home to sparkling formations, towering natural chimneys, grottos and a crystal-clear stream. Take an educational tour to learn all about the formation of the cavern.

If you’re a bit nervous to go underground, take heart. The tour guides are well-trained and the special lighting and sturdy handrails will make sure this trip is nothing but enjoyable. Your tour will start in the gift shop.

Plan for the tour to take around 55 minutes, depending on the size of the group.

Where to stay

Sevierville offers lodging for every traveling type. And whether you’ll be coming solo, with a special someone, or as a family or larger group, you are sure to find your home away from home.
