1 White House announces rural renewable energy investment:
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a nearly $11 billion investment on Tuesday to help bring affordable clean energy to rural communities throughout the country. U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said said it was the largest single federal investment in rural electrification since President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Rural Electrification Act in 1936 as part of the New Deal.
2 Texas boy arrested after fatal shooting at restaurant:
A 12-year-old boy has been arrested on a murder warrant in the fatal shooting of a Sonic Drive-in employee in Texas, police said. Matthew Davis, 32, was shot and killed Saturday night as he fought with Angel Gomez, 20, in the parking lot of the restaurant in Keene, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) southwest of Dallas, police said. The boy was at the restaurant with Gomez, who was causing an unspecified disturbance in the parking lot, and shot Davis several times after taking a gun from Gomez’s vehicle, according to a police statement.
3 Prince Harry seeks to challenge denial of police protection request:
A lawyer has asked a London judge to allow Prince Harry to challenge the government’s denial of his request to pay for police protection when he visits the U.K. Attorney Shaheed Fatima said Tuesday that the government had exceeded its authority. The British government stopped providing security after Harry and his wife, Meghan, quit their royal duties and moved to California in 2020.
4 German court convicts 5 men in museum heist:
A German court has convicted five men of breaking into a Dresden museum and stealing 21 pieces of jewelry containing more than 4,300 diamonds and a total insured value of at least $129 million. The defendants received prison sentences, German news agency dpa reported. The Dresden state court ruled that the five were responsible for the theft of the 18th century jewelry from the Green Vault Museum on Nov. 25, 2019.
5 Olympic figure skater Hughes running for Congress:
Sarah Hughes, who won a gold medal in figure skating at the 2002 Winter Olympics, has filed to run for Congress in New York, joining several other Democrats seeking to unseat Long Island Republican Anthony Esposito. Hughes, 38, will make a formal announcement of her campaign for New York’s 4th Congressional District “in the next few weeks,” spokesperson Max Kramer said Tuesday.
