A man was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after crashing his car into a Secret Service SUV that was blocking a Wilmington, Del., intersection for President Biden’s motorcade on Sunday night. The driver, James Cooper, a 46-year-old Wilmington man, was also charged with inattentive driving, police said. Neither the president nor the first lady — who were visiting Biden’s campaign headquarters in Wilmington — were harmed in the incident.
Suspected cyberattack hits gas stations in Iran:
Nearly 70% of Iran’s gas stations went out of service following possible sabotage — a reference to cyberattacks, Iranian state TV reported. The report said a “software problem” caused the irregularity in the gas stations. It urged people not to rush to the stations that were still operational. Iran, long sanctioned by the West, faces difficulties in getting up-to-date hardware and software, often relying on older systems no longer being patched by manufacturers. That would make it easier for a potential hacker to target.
Egypt’s president elected to third term:
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-sissi, who has ruled with an unquestioned grip for the past nine years, won reelection to a third, six-year term in office, election authorities announced. He ran against three virtually unknown opponents. El-sissi recorded a landslide victory, securing 89.6% of the vote, the National Election Authority said. Turnout was 66.8% of more than 67 million registered voters.
Serbia’s opposition claims election fraud:
Serbia’s weekend snap election was held in “unjust conditions,” with multiple reports of irregularities, international observers said, as opponents of populist President Aleksandar Vucic took to the streets claiming the vote was rigged. Political tensions spiked in the Balkan country over the parliamentary and local elections on Sunday.
Youtube mom pleads guilty in child abuse case:
A Utah mother of six who gave parenting advice via a once-popular Youtube channel called “8 Passengers” pleaded guilty to four felony counts of seconddegree aggravated child abuse for abusing and starving two of her children. Ruby Franke is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 20; each charge carries a sentence of one to 15 years in prison.
